4.A Huge Game of Jenga - But With Chairs

Renowned artist Doris Salcedo's amazing piece in Istanbul back in 2002 brilliantly illustrates how context could change our perspective of what might otherwise seem as absolute anarchy. The enormous effort involves precisely arranging about 1,550 chairs between two buildings to create an amazing cascade of furniture that seemed to defy both gravity and reason. This installation's scale and accuracy are very amazing; it turns commonplace objects into a remarkable artistic statement.
Not only does this work visually, but also its technical ability necessary to successfully accomplish such a precarious-looking construction. Every chair had to be precisely placed to give the impression of impending collapse while yet ensuring the whole display stayed stable. The works address ideas of balance, chaos, order, and maybe even reflections on societal systems and human organisation. A monument to its strong artistic vision, the fact that it was produced two decades ago still enthrals audiences.
